The ego is born within us when we are conceived. It forms our individuality. At best, it pushes us to share our unique individuality with the world. At at its worst, it controls our lives and keeps us from experiencing joy and well-being. The ego keeps us stuck in unhealthy thought patterns that arise from fear. If you’ve ever had felt like you living in hamster wheel -going round and round but not feeling contentment – you were being led by your ego.
Your ego is your false self. Our true state of being is Divine or Universal Consciousness. Deep introspection allows us to see the difference in emotional states between the ego and the universal consciousness state of being, also known as truth or love. The ego lives on fear. It lives on making sure you see yourself as separate from others. In contrast, Universal consciousness arises from love and connection to all that is.
Your ego has a long list of things you should be, you should do, and you should have. It also has a list of what others should be, do, and have. It is a source of never-ending judgement. Your ego is a sort of limiter. It keeps you from expanding your perspective into a spiritual paradigm where solutions to problems come easily and are most gratifying. It cuts you off from the field of infinite possibility. Ego wants us to believe that only things outside ourselves will make us happy. It causes us to push ourselves for material success. However, its never content. Even after you reach an ego-directed goal, it will then tell you you need to do more. This false self-image created by your Ego will continue to play out in your life until you become aware of the unhappiness it causes. So many people live unhappy lives because they never deeply connect with their inner awareness which can show them that they are not their egos. Until you reach out for a another way to look at things, you’re apt to stay trapped by how your ego thinks you should live life. The truth is that until we become very uncomfortable in a situation in our life we generally don’t reach out for conscious contact with our spiritual nature. Difficulty in relationships, addictions, financial distress, overall anxiety and dissatisfaction with work are indications that we are relying too much on our ego and not enough on our spiritual self. Â

We can’t act from our divine self and our ego at the same time. It’s like trying to turn left and right at the same time.
